The educational press and research literature is awash with articles and research on the reasons why the implementation of ICT into schools is not living up to expectations. One of the major themes that emerges is the lack of teacher development and training. For ICT to be successful in the school environment, the teachers themselves have to be confident to use the materials themselves and to be inspired to incorporate ICT into their lessons.
Check out this story about our training: "GIS - Geomatica Training a Resounding Success in South Cape"
One of the key differentiators of Geomatica is the importance that is placed on teacher development and training. Schools are strongly encouraged to participate in a training programme. These can be tailor made to suit the particular school, but 4 hours is the recommended minimum training time.
AWARENESS WORKSHOPS
We run one day sessions that aim to educate teachers about GIS, it’s place in our schools and give them confidence to use the basic tools in Geomatica.
SPATIAL LITERACY WORKSHOPS
A one day session that introduces educators to the concepts of Spatial Literacy, it’s importance in education and how it can be taught in our schools. More on Spatial Literacy …
INTRODUCTORY TRAINING
Typically, during this 4 hour introductory session, teachers will have an introduction to the GIS environment and will learn basic Geomatica skills using the Geomatica Titanium Atlas. The teachers will leave the training with an understanding of Geomatica and will have gained sufficient knowledge and confidence to use Geomatica Titanium in their own classrooms.
Teachers will be issued with a Certificate of Attendance at the end of the training course.
CURRICULUM TRAINING We also offer more specific training for any educators who desire it. Our most popular courses at present are Using Geomatica to teach the Grade 10 /11 / 12 GIS Curriculum. These are structured courses based on our own Grade 10, 11 and 12 Workbooks which align with the Geography FET Curriculum Statement and can be run over 2 to 3 days.
